UNetbootin

Intalled Ubuntu Eee on my fiancee's Eee 4g via usb with UNetbootin

Wikipedia Page

I think UNetbootin represents the future of linux installations as it completely eliminates the need for burning CDs and the need for an optical drive.

This is good for the environment and saves on purchasing unecessary hardware, seeing as most modern machines can install a linux distro from a USB key.

I would hope we'd be entering another end of disposable media and re-entering the era of re-useable media.

The Nouveau Floppy times if you wish.

Ubuntu 8.04 + Second life

Installed from getdeb with no problems.

Tried to install from the ubuntu install from the apt-get a secondlife thread with no success.

Will post more info down the line.

Debian Etch and PPC linuxes

A few days ago I decided I was going to install Debian PPC on my G4.

So far so good, it's been performing with a grace and stability little seen in the PPC linux world.

I have been very satisfied with Ubuntu on the x86 architecture but it's the pitts on PPC machines and sadly [Ubuntu] is no longer under devellopment for PPC.

I've been adding to it slowly and it took a little while to set up... the xorg config files originally set my monitor up as a CRT monitor when it was in fact an LCD. However once I got over that hurdle it seemed fine.

Now I have a stable, if somewhat vanilla system... more updates to come on this.

Wireless Soapbox

A new idea/well needed pandering regarding the state of the Canadian wireless industry:

It's by Yak Mobile/Globalive... so there's the recruitment factor but all the same responsiveness to potential customers desires is pretty impressive.

Go Yak I hope.

Slackware nervousness

I'm debating whether or not I should try Slackware, at this point in time I'm very comfortable with Ubuntu 8.04 and as far as I'm concerned it is the most solid distro I've used.

Either way I'm told Slackware respects all linux conventions so as a result I'm most interested in learning it for that reason alone.

I'll write more once I get a guinea pig computer up and running because I don't think I'll be using this computer.

Ubuntu 8.04 to date

So far I have been using 8.04 with little to no complaints on my laptop, I have no opinion so far with regards to my G4 or the old Dell desktop, I installed it yesterday on the Dell machine but my new PCI ports were Shite so I have not yet completed the test more news later.

I'm currently gleefully unemployed and suffice it to say I have no interest in writing or even doing that much with my telecommunications passion. Zoh, that being said I'm promising I'll get back to this blog eventually. However for the time being comments about Ubuntu, and GPhone will have to suffice.

Ubuntu Wish Lists revisited

I am currently in the process of downloading YDL 5.0 Cell for Playstation 3.

Previously I was working my way to near perfect functionality with Ubuntu 7.10, which although slow, I must say it highly user-friendly on the PS3. Some hangups with getting the resolution working but thanks to other diligent Ubuntu users, I got it working on my 47" LCD just fine.

However the upgrade process to Hardy Heron 8.04 completely killed my install. It turns out that kboot (OTHEROS.BLD for the fans) cannot load Hardy Heron.

Needless to say, Ubuntu being my favorite Linux distro I was highly disappointed yet again.

At this point I'm not giving up on Ubuntu, but I would like to know why it is that certain functionality cannot be created within an otherwise powerful *nix OS.

OS X can run Video chat without problems, and windows can run an S-Video TV-Out port.

As a future wish, I'm hoping that da boyz an' gals at Cannonical will be getting with the program and making some necessary adjustments to their ports and software drivers.

Untill then, Ubuntu won't be ready for the big leagues.

Which saddens me to no end, but I'll be waiting and posting more.

Letter to the CRTC Supporting CAIP submission regarding network shapping

C&P from DSL Reports

See

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20311068-Help-CAIP-in-its-CRTC-submission-re-throttling-via-Bell

for full discussion.

Help CAIP in it's CRTC submission re throttling via Bell

If you would like to support CAIP in their efforts please file submissions with the Commission over the next week to show your support for the request for interim relief. These submissions don't have to be very complicated.
All that you need to do is:

1) click on the following link:

http://support.crtc.gc.ca/crtcsubmissionmu/forms/Telecom.aspx?lang=e

2) Select "Part VII/PN" from the list

3) insert the CRTC file number (# 8622-C51-200805153) into the "Subject" Line and

4) insert the following suggested text into the "Description / Comments / Questions" box: "I am writing to express my support for the Application that CAIP has filed with the CRTC regarding Bell Canada's throttling practices. I believe that these practices contravene Bell
Canada's duties as a common carrier and that the Commission should direct Bell to immediately cease and desist from throttling the traffic of independent ISPs."

Bell Traffic Shaping

to compbureau@cb-bc.gc.ca,

To whom it may concern,

Bell Canada has recently taken it upon themselves to unilaterally begin the practice of controlling traffic on the services it wholesales to independent Internet Service Providers.

This practice is akin to forcing their own policies on independent service providers relating to internet usage by limiting the type of traffic and quantity of traffic they allow to reach these internet bandwidth wholesalers.

By imposing their policies and willfully controlling the use of the internet bandwidth they sell to resellers, they are exercising anti-competitive practices and meddling into the management of third party providers; in turn inhibiting the wholesaler's ability to manage based on their own business policy preferences.

Bell Canada has overstepped its authority and is flexing their muscle (infrastructure control) to impose their will on independent competitors.

I am a customer of an independent ISP and have purchased bandwidth directly from them. My provider is at the mercy of this underhanded tactic being employed by Bell Canada.

To obtain an overview of this situation, please review the posts at dslreports.com and specifically at http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Bell-Canada-Throttles-Wholesalers-Doesnt-Bother-To-Tell-Them-92915

I implore you to quell this unfair practice by contacting Bell Canada and instructing them to cease and desist immediately.

Regards,

Ubuntu Propagation Patterns

So Far,

I checked my last post and I announced I was going to do Kernel 2.6.24 , as previously expected the kernel is not yet ready for prime time, looks like I'm waiting for for Hardy Heron after all. I did install it within 7.10 and I was not happy.

Namely Hanging, and bad touchpad control. Seeing as ubuntu is not up to snuff on the whole trackpad thing in the first place, I will wait for the official Hardy Release thank you.

So devellopment 2.6.24 gets a thumbs down for the time being. In the future I will be posting links to the tutorials I have successfully used on my Machines.

Other News:

I have a working full Ubuntu 7.10 on my PS3 in glorious 1080p resolution! It's one sexy beast. Also due to the wonderfull nature of open source it reads accros my network seamlessly.

I will post instructions from home when I get there, should you choose to go forward.

Kernel updates

I've decided I'm going to move my Kernel to 2.6.24, I'm currently at 2.6.22 and it's growing limited in it's treatment of a dual processor machine, I will post my adventures in getting that up shortly.

Wish list for Ubuntu and Voip Telephony update

Voip update:

I've found a softphone that does not conflict with my Sipura ATA, which I can use on OS X and Win Xp.

Trials with Zoiper have been good, so far I realize it is not an open source client but it works very well.

I have tried it on Ubuntu and it works as well as Ekiga minus the cam functionality.

However I do not have my HDA intel card working properly hence I still can't use the ubuntu partition + softphone to make outbound calls, cause although I can hear them they can't hear me.

I don't know if I have to mess around with the card more or update my kernel...

Once I have a working setup, or make some progress from this point I will post specs.
